Her lived experience of twenty six years of domestic partnership and marriage has prepared her to understand the complexity of modern love and the dance between autonomy and togetherness. Amanda works with individuals and couples to understand the behavioral systems of romantic love. Whether single or in partnership, her work facilitates the undoing of the loneliness that is commonly felt while living in the modern world.
Co-Regulation Heals.
Due to hierarchical design of the human nervous system, there is a lifelong need for co-regulation, sustained bonding, and attachment. Ironically, co-regulation needs to be established before self regulation. This neurobiological imperative is what makes breakups almost unbearable!
In the realm of romantic love, our attachment, caregiving, and sexual systems define that we do actually need one another. In our formative years, we are wired for connection through attachment. Attachment styles are often established in infancy and influence how we mesh, bond, or avoid others. According to Van der Kolk (2014), focused attachment with another person can shift us out of disorganized and fearful states, thereby resetting the nervous system.
This is why the aftermath of a breakup can be so hard. We are faced with the challenge of can I self-regulate and manage my emotions alone without a partner to comfort me? Can I self-soothe? It is a tall order when we have been long term relationships and have enjoyed the benefits of co-regulation without even thinking about it until…POOF…they are gone!
Our bodies can actually thirst for or crave touch. This is why touch therapies are suggested to ward off depression and loneliness. As a skilled therapist, Amanda can provide the secure attachment that a client needs to set their lives in a positive direction. Likewise, therapeutic massage can provide co-regulation with an increase of oxytocin and endorphins, the neurochemicals that aid in attachment and healthy bonding.
